Who’s behind the paper?
A quick intro for the interested. I’m Hannah, I live in South Devon with my husband, little girl and dog. I have a background in creating and curating. My husband and I used to run a company called Solidwool, which we sold in 2020. the southwester is an idea that came to me afterwards, whilst out in the woods and was too exciting to let go of.
Two reasons why.
Reason 1.
The weekend papers. I don’t know about you, but a weekend favourite used to be getting up on a sunday morning, nipping to the shops and picking up the paper and some freshly baked goods, before having a lazy morning reading the latest news (pre-child, clearly).
But then digital took hold and it was so much easier, and saved a few pounds, to just sit and read online instead.
You know how this goes, it’s just not the same. Newspapers are offline, tangible, real. They create a different reading experience and in my opinion, a better one. And anyway, can we all agree, the news has just all got a little too depressing to read anyway…
Reason 2.
Back in December 2018, just before the world tilted, I hosted an event called Wintertide in Buckfastleigh, Devon.
It was a one-day pop up shop bringing together over 40 talented artists, designers, makers and creators from the south west and beyond.
There was such a great vibe on the day, the space was packed and we were still blissfully happy to be out in a crowd. The day was a showcase for the people, the creativity and good thinking that exists here.
the southwester is an evolution of this. It’s bringing these people and stories together, but in a newspaper. For you to enjoy in the comfort of your own home.
