A Day of Tea: Leaves, Wood, Clay

A trio of activities come together to create this unique day celebrating the ritual of drinking tea and the art of making.

The day will begin with Lou Astbury, founder of Cornwall based From Trees, who will take you on an explorative journey into the forest, looking at how teas can support your body and the environment to thrive. You will learn different ways of brewing, what you can grow or wild harvest yourself and the chance to taste a variety of her teas.

Following on from this, green wood worker Alex Finberg will lead you through the process of carving your very own wooden teaspoon, from log to finished spoon. You will use simple hand tools and age old carving techniques. There is something extremely satisfying about carving and then using a spoon you have made!

After a delicious lunch, you will join local ceramicist Imogen Taylor-Noble to make your own tea bowl using a hand forming method from Westcountry clay and a Japanese technique called Kurinuki. You will wrap a handful of foraged twigs around a pre-shaped solid lump of clay and then use scooping tools to remove the interior of the clay block to reveal the tea bowl shape. These will be taken away by Imogen to bisc fire and glaze and can be collected or sent when ready.
